Description

"Hinemoana Baker weaves the spoken word with the sung, Te Reo Maori with English, space with clutter, beauty with sadness", NZ Musician

Bring your picnic blankets for an enthralling evening with Hinemoana Baker. A singer songwriter and published poet of mixed Māori and Pākehā heritage, Baker's universe is a rich tapestry of lyric poetry and acoustic music, served by a voice of beautiful purity. Her stage presence has been described as "spellbinding". She will play original and borrowed songs, stringing words and melodies on her guitar in the tradition of musical poets such as Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

Back in 2004, Hinemoana's first album, 'puāwai' was a finalist for the NZ Music Awards. Her poetry has also captured the attention of actor Viggo Mortensen's of Lord of the Rings fame, whose publishing house Perceval Press co-published her book of poetry 'mātuhi I needle' in the US. Passionate about spoken word and sonic experimentation, Baker has toured New Zealand but also Indonesia, Australia, Europe and the USA since the early 1990's. She is bringing her unique warmth and breadth of talent to Wanaka for what we know will be a magical evening.

Join us for a special evening in the relaxed outdoor setting of the BG Artspace at Bistro Gentil and discover for yourself the major stage presence that is Hinemoana Baker.

Bring your picnic blankets and low chairs for this evening of soulful music and poems at the BG Artspace. Depending on numbers, we might arrange chairs and bean bags and are happy to sort higher seating for those who need it. Please note that we will move the performance indoors in the warm embrace of the Beanie Cafe in case of rain.
