Description

A poet, recording artist, singer-songwriter, editor and tutor of creative writing, Hinemoana Baker wrangles words, from published poems on the page to singing poems over the looped sounds of her diving gear. Her particular fascination is the tension between the sounds of language and what it means - how we privilege one or the other, and how we can play with both of these in a poem. All of these things will be discussed in this workshop. Hinemoana has twenty five year's experience teaching the creative arts, so this session will be fun and interactive.

Whatever your outlet of predilection, she will help you tune in. She loves writing exercises as a way of encouraging new lyrical explorations.

Her first collection of poetry, mātuhi | needle (Victoria University Press, 2004), draws on aspects of her mixed Māori and Pākehā heritage. It was published both in Aotearoa and also in the US by actor/poet Viggo Mortensen of Lord of the Rings fame. In 2010 Hinemoana's second book of poetry, 'kōiwi kōiwi | bone bone', was published by VUP. Between 2004 and 2014, she also released 5 albums of music and poetry, and edited several anthologies of New Zealand writing.
